Cyclists from across the Rainy River District were given tickets for wearing their bicycle helmets. Once the promotion was over three kids from Atikokan, Fort Frances and Rainy River were drawn randomly for grand prizes. Kirsten Armstrong, 9, seen here, was the winner in Rainy River. She received an iPod Nano for wearing her helmet.

The Rainy River Cattlemen's Stocker Sale saw fewer than normal head of cattle go through the sales barn. Warm weather was partially to blame as producers took advantage of it to hay and combine.

2013 Emo Fair Queen Ashley Croswell, flanked by First Princess Madison Allan, right, and Second Princess Hailey Wirtz, were all smiles after being crowned Thursday night at the Emo Arena. Six-year-old Jonathan Gray of Fort Frances was crowned 2013 Mini-King, while Sienna Tom, 3, of Stratton was named the Mini-Queen.

Harry Arnould, left, was presented with The Ambassador of Peace Medal from the South Korean Government this past Saturday. Fellow Korean War Vet, Len Proteau, formerly of Rainy River, came to town to present the medal. Also on hand to offer his congratulations was Rainy River Legion President Walter Wagner, who is seen holding the citation from the government of South Korea read to Arnould before the medal presentation. On July 27, 2013 it was the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

Last week Buena Vista Resort, in Morson, hosted the LOWISA (Lake of the Woods International Sailboat Association) for two nights. They seemed to have lots of fun with their sailboat races, children's activities, and kite sailing. The resort made a special breakfast buffet, pulled pork sandwiches, fish fry and held a beer garden. It was a busy two days for staff but it was a great turnout and everyone left happy.

Emo Assistant Librarian Kathy Leek (left) and Rainy River Librarian Michael Dawber unveil new farming books for children on August 8. The books were purchased with $150 donations from both the Rainy River Federation of Agriculture and the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society. The titles are now on display at both libraries in time for the Annual Fall Fair, which runs August 15-17.
