Does your cedar have a sunburn?

As humans we often suffer from sunburn during the summer months. Did you know that trees and shrubs are susceptible to sunburn too? Sunburn on most woody plants usually occurs during the winter, although your garden vegetables and tender flowering plants can suffer from sunburn as well.

Chamber hopes to get back on its feet

Efforts are underway to rejuvenate the 70+ year old Rainy River and District Chamber of Commerce (RRDCC).
A meeting has been called tonight at the Rainy River Legion at 6 p.m. to try and get the organization back on its feet. It has faltered in the past year or so with very few meetings being called or attended.
Last week the last elected Executive, President Crystal Lindal, V.P. Sara Berg, Treas. Terri-Anne Lundgren, Sec. Monica Nelson and Amy Ruff met to try and get the organization back on track.

RR home saved from fire

Bill Hagarty credited a smoke detector with saving his and wife Joan’s home and possibly their lives.
Around 2:45 a.m. last Wednesday morning the Rainy River Fire Dept. was called to a fire at the 119 Third St. home of the Hagarty’s. However, by the time they had arrived Bill had extinguished the fire which started in the basement.

The English Public Board Council Conference held April 1st and 2nd in Toronto was an educational and enjoyable experience. The conference, which was held at the Courtyard-Marriot Hotel, began Friday morning. RJ Kelford and Heather Maxwell, President Vice-President respectfully, welcomed about 30 representatives from English Public school boards from across the province.

With spring treating us to the warm weather we are anxious to get out into the yard and start our yard and gardening chores but be cautious when starting spring yard work. Spring lawn care at the right time is important if you want to have a healthy lawn this summer.

Cattle moooved Saturday

The first Stratton cattle sale of the year yielded good results considering the U.S. border is still closed to live Canadian cattle.
Stratton Sales Barn Manager Russell Richards said Monday, “I felt the community was here and in general all were fairly pleased.”

Third annual Alzheimer’s walk set for May 14th

Do you like to walk? Well on May 14th there will be a great reason to get out and do just that.
The Third Annual Alzheimer Society Walk for Memories will be held in Rainy River.
Last year the number of participants doubled from the inaugural year from 4-9. The amount of money they raised also more than doubled from $1,053 to $2,509.
